The Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Lapland is seeking an Associate Professor (Tenure Track) of Responsible Business in Tourism.

The University of Lapland is a science and art university and an inspiring and international work community specializing in research on Arctic and northern change. The position of Associate Professor (Tenure Track) of Responsible Business in Tourism adheres to the multidisciplinary discipline of tourism research, which is part of the Multidisciplinary Tourism Institute and the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Lapland. Tourism research is a unique discipline in Finland, as it can only be studied as a major at the University of Lapland. The discipline represents the so-called Nordic School of Tourism Studies, which emphasizes a responsible, creative, and critical approach to tourism research, planning, and development.

The position of Associate Professor (Tenure Track) of Responsible Business in Tourism is linked to the University of Laplands strategic choice of Sustainable Tourism, strengthening our education and research activities related to business. The position is filled for a fixed term of five years. Before the end of the fixed term, an evaluation process will be initiated to assess whether the employee meets the qualifications for a professorship.

The Multidisciplinary Tourism Institute (MTI) is an innovator in the field of tourism, educating tourism professionals at both the University of Lapland and Lapland University of Applied Sciences and conducting research in close cooperation with the international scientific and research community, businesses, educational organizations, and authorities. The tourism research discipline at the University of Lapland operates as part of MTI. Internationally, MTI has created a distinctive expert profile by combining multidisciplinary, critical social science research traditions, art-based methods, service design, and rethinking of economics and business.

– providing research-based teaching and guidance, and supporting students learning and understanding of issues related to responsible business in tourism

We expect

According to Section 30 of the University of Laplands Rules of Procedure, the criteria and evaluation procedure for the positions of Assistant Professor and Associate Professor (fixed-term) filled through open application are defined in the Tenure Track career path model approved by the Board. The position of Associate Professor (fixed-term) requires a relevant doctoral degree, evidence of scientific research work, and the teaching skills needed in the position.

The position also requires the ability to conduct high-quality and up-to-date research, to lead a research group, and to obtain supplementary research funding. We expect a deep understanding of business and the tourism industry acquired through education and the ability to create, develop, and study business activities. The Associate Professor is expected to supervise students and theses at all levels and to participate in the continuous development of tourism research education. The duties of the Associate Professor also include various institutional tasks.

The position requires proficiency in the English language and either proficiency in Finnish or a strong motivation to learn Finnish. As for a foreign applicant or a Finnish citizen who is not a native speaker, reasonable proficiency in Finnish may be required within five years.

Working hours: Full-time
Probationary period: 6 months
Salary: The salary is based on the university salary system for teaching and research staff, level 7, with an additional task-specific supplement. In addition, a personal performance-based salary component is paid, amounting up to 50% of the task-specific salary component. The starting salary is approximately €5,540 – €5,774.
