We are now looking for Researcher trainees to join our Cellulose and textile fibers team. This position is temporary and continues approximately 3 months from May to August 2025. This position in located in Lappeenranta, Finland.

What you will do

In this position, your main task will be research work in the modification of cellulose fibers, process developments and/or end applications.

This is a great opportunity to build on your current competencies and learn interesting new things for future. You will play an important part in high energy team which develops new multifunctional fibers to customers’ future needs in the consumer applications. You will be reporting to Research Managers, Pulp Research and Innovations.

Based in Lappeenranta, Finland, the UPM Research Center comprises the research and development for the global operations of UPM-Kymmene Corporation. Our proactive role will be to find new business opportunities for kraft pulp. Main focus is on the modification of the kraft fiber by chemical, enzymatic and mechanical means with lean process concept(s).

Who you are

You are a team player with proactive mindset, strong initiative, and responsibility. You can communicate with R&D personnel fluently in English. Other languages are seen as an asset. This task requires skills in scientific presentations and written reporting.

The ideal candidate would have the following skills:

-Good knowledge in fiber chemistry, polymer chemistry, cellulose materials is essential and good knowledge of the analytical methods is a benefit
-Knowledge and practical experience in bio-based polymers and their characterization
-Good experience in chemical modification of fibers in practical and theoretical level
-Able to read and adopt scientific articles and make them into practice
-Well-organized, can-do attitude, well-motivated, independent, hands-on person to work in laboratory, pilot or mill level together with our other experts and operators
