[The Faculty of Social Sciences, Business and Economics, and Law](https://www.abo.fi/en/about-abo-akademi-university/faculties/faculty-of-social-sciences-business-and-economics-and-law/) offers one position as Doctoral Researcher for max 36 months within the project ‘Gendered norms and practices in Nordic and Baltic climate policy institutions’, funded by Nordforsk. The position is placed at the Faculty of Social Sciences, Business and Economic, and Law and starts on 1.2.2025, or according to agreement.

If the appointee has not yet been accepted for doctoral studies at Åbo Akademi University by the start of the employment, the position will start with a fixed term employment as Research Assistant.

Background

The project ‘Gendered norms and practices in Nordic and Baltic climate policy institutions’ focuses on examining how gender equality is understood and implemented in climate policy institutions across the eight Nordic and Baltic states. The research is carried out by a consortium with partners from Sweden, Finland, Iceland and Lithuania. The sub-project hosted by Åbo Akademi University offers an opportunity to pursue doctoral studies based on the research done in the project.

Description of the position

The work tasks are related to doctoral studies and thesis. The main task of this position is to conduct research on the linkages between gender and climate policy institutions across the Nordic and Baltic region. This includes the collection, analysis, and management of data (surveys and interviews), communicating research findings and writing reports and scientific articles. The recruited person will collaborate with the consortium partners and advance his/her own PhD research on the topic.

The position is located in Turku, Finland.

Qualification and assessment

We are looking for a motivated person who has an interest in research work related to the topic of the project, and the educational background in political science, environmental social science, sociology or other closely related field suitable for the position described above. Taking initiative is an important asset for the person hired.

The main qualification requirements for the positions are:

– Master’s degree in a relevant field
– Fluent oral and written skills in English
– Good understanding of climate policy /gender studies
– Knowledge of qualitative research methods (conducting and analyzing interviews)

Knowledge of languages spoken in the Nordic and Baltic countries (Finnish in particular) is an additional asset as it will benefit the data collection.

Appreciated (but not mandatory) technical skills cover quantitative research methods. Desired soft skills are critical thinking, communication, time management, collaboration and problem solving.

The applicants are assessed based on the qualifications above in the relevant field or related subjects, as well as their description of research interests. During the selection process, the applicants can be invited to an interview.

Please note, that there is a separate application process for the admission to a doctoral programme. Applicants do not have to begin the separate application process for the admission to a doctoral program at ÅAU before being appointed, but their eligibility for admission needs to be confirmed in connection to the evaluation of their application for the position.

Terms of employment

The principle of total working time (1,612 hours per year) applies to employment as doctoral researcher or research assistant. The employment is full-time. The individual study plan of doctoral researchers is evaluated annually. The work tasks are defined in an annual work plan. The salary is determined in accordance with the general collective agreement for universities, and will be based on levels 2-4 of the job demand level for teaching and researching staff.

A trial period applies for new employees.
